Having established a strong community of literary-minded filmmakers with the poem project, Comma has since started commissioning short story adaptations. This screening features six recent works: Kate Jessop’s ‘The Loss’, based on a David Constantine story about a businessman who feels his soul slip away in the middle of a presentation; Ronald Wright’s ‘The Dogs’, based on a Hanif Kureishi story about domestic violence and the vulnerability of the single-parent family; Charlotte Caetano’s ‘The Flying Baby of Wavertree’ based on Brian Patten’s story of WWII urban legend; plus the Film4 funded ‘Five Miles Out’ (based on a story by otherwise unpublished Manchester author Sarah Tierney), Claire Heaney and Carl Hunter’s experimental adaptation of Frank Cottrell Boyce’s short story ‘Accelerate’, and Dean Brocklehurst’s ‘Mimic’ (story by Alan Sillitoe).

Followed by a Q&A with Andrew Haigh & Tristan Goligher (‘Five Miles Out’) and Carl Hunter & Claire Heaney (‘Accelerate’).
