About the 2009 Festival

With over 40 short films adapted from literary texts – including premieres of dozens of special commissions and exclusive screenings of internationally acclaimed adaptations – Version launched last year with a celebration of the process of transformation from page to screen.

Version is not just a platform for new films but a unique adaptation-only commissioning project. 2009, its first year, showcased poetry-films by directors from across the country (commissioned in conjunction with Literature Northwest), as well as a host of new short story films including the Film4-funded ‘Five Miles Out’. Masterclasses and workshops offered budding filmmakers hands-on advice on the process of transforming textual narratives into film, whilst networking sessions enabled crews to get together for future projects and put filmmakers in contact with writers. The two days’ activities culminated in a premiere and party celebrating four short dramas specially funded and produced by the festival.
